History
2023
In 2023, Daum Foundation focused on improving the quality and maximizing the impact of its ongoing programs, including the Nonprofit Startup Incubating Program, the ChangeON Conference, and D.MZ, while continuing to operate Dongnakga, a space dedicated to nonprofit activists. The Foundation also developed the Impact Capacity Assessment for Nonprofit Startups (ICAN), held a research presentation to introduce the assessment, and launched a new consulting program based on the ICAN framework.
Through the Nonprofit Startup Incubation Program, the Foundation incubated 18 teams over the course of 2023 through open calls for applications alongside active scouting of promising teams – the largest number of teams the Foundation supported since the launch of the Incubation Program, with participating teams working across an increasingly diverse range of fields, including care, environment, women’s rights, media, and volunteering. As the first nonprofit startup incubator to develop the Impact Capacity Assessment for Nonprofit Startups (ICAN), the Foundation provided capacity assessment consulting for 10 nonprofit startups across the country. The Foundation also conducted education and mentoring programs for nonprofit startups in Cheongdo, Gyeongsangbuk-do, where it was able to confirm the potential for the nonprofit startup ecosystem to expand beyond major urban areas.
With support from the Babo Nanum Foundation, Dongnakga established itself as an incubation space for nonprofit startups. A total of 13 nonprofit startup teams moved into Dongnakga and used the space as an office for their early-stage operations. The basement was also transformed into an exhibition space, actively utilized to introduce nonprofit startups and showcase their activities and stories.
D.MZ hosted around 150 activists in their 20s and 30s from diverse areas within the social sector, including nonprofit associations and startups, welfare organizations, nonprofit foundations, corporate CSR teams, social ventures, and social enterprises. The program ran regular meetings consisting of multiple sessions, as well as one-time casual 'D.MZ ㄱㄱ?' meetups, while also designing alumni events to strengthen and expand networks among activists.
The 2023 ChangeON Conference brought together 400 nonprofit activists and stakeholders under the theme "Exertion (奮鬪)—Forging Ahead with All Our Might." Keynote lectures on timely topics, along with a variety of accompanying programs, were met with high levels of satisfaction among participants. ChangeON@ was held in two locations, Busan and Cheongju, with programs tailored to the needs and interests of each region in collaboration with local partner organizations.
With support from the Open Society Foundations, Daum Foundation selected and supported 24 organizations engaged in human rights movements and activism across diverse fields. In particular, the Foundation provided organizations located outside Seoul and the greater Seoul metropolitan area, as well as newly established organizations, with opportunities to sustain and expand their activities. Following the Foundation’s initial support, 13 of the 24 organizations were selected for other grant programs or established additional partnerships during the project period, resulting in a total of 23 follow-up activities.
